CHAPTER 14

Regalion

Leonolis sat there in stunned silence as the reality that Regalion was indeed alive and well. Many questions began to stir in his mind, first and foremost of which was, “Lord Regalion, how can you be father of Lucian when it is said that no one knows his age? How can you be father of the one who has tormented the land of Bren for all ages? How can it be that you are the father of the one who has sought to destroy our family and depose the royal line since time began?”

“Ah, yes. I suppose that is a bit confusing, my son. But what you must realize is that the spirit of Lucian has been around since the foundation of time. Each generation since the beginning of time has had to face its own incarnation of that spirit,” replied Regalion. “It just so happened that a series of events led to the inhabitation of that spirit within the heart and mind of my own dear son. Before he was evil he was my son…and I suppose that somewhere in that twisted mind a bit of my son and his true identity still remain. At least that is my hope. Why else do you suppose he would have kept me alive after all these years?”

“But how did the evil overtake him?” asked Leonolis.

“You need your rest, boy. You have been through much this day. And around here, one never knows what a day might hold. I would suggest you get some sleep. We will have plenty of time for talk,” said the wise old Regalion.

And with those words, Leonolis began to drift into a deep sleep as he laid his beaten body down on the rough straw that served as bedding in the dark, dank room. As he slept, his mind was flooded with many wonderful, adventure-filled dreams. He saw images he faintly remembered from somewhere in his past–of swinging high into the air from a rope swing and diving deep into a cool, clear pool, of riding a horse fast as the wind, leaping every stream and downed tree he came to, of fishing with a long pole and grasshoppers, of running from a group of boys, of falling into a deep hole in a dark cave. of his friend Dreyden, of soaring through the air as Arolis leapt above the fray of mock battle, of Sniffum and Snuffim, of Jidgel and the swamp, of Galennia and Rania and the Swine Rats, of Moonrysin and the Chiroptera, of how he would one day free the people of Bren from the evil of Lucian and rule with kindness and bravery over the land.

And suddenly Leonolis was awakened. Gently shaking the boy, Regalion told him to ‘do as I do’. Just then, the door of the cell swung open with a loud clank and the sound of creaking metal hinges in need of a bit of axle grease. By now, Leonolis’ eyes had adjusted to the dim light. He could see two guards blocking the doorway.
